“There’s No Place Like Dome”
IN ANCIENT TIMES the Greek Poet ‘Homer’ (get it?) stated that the height of the bell-shaped vault which surrounds the earth is only twice that of Mount Olympus, approximately four miles (probably an underestimate). We read in the poems of Homer that star-strewn Olympus, dwelling place of the gods, is made of glittering bronze. In the Old Testament, the prophet Job describes the firmament as a mirror of metal.
Then, in 2014, a team of researchers from the University of Colorado discovered that the Earth appears to be surrounded by an invisible dome, extending well over 7,200 miles above Earth’s surface.
‘It’s like looking at the phenomenon with new eyes, a new set of instrumentation,
which give us the detail to say, ‘Yes, there is this hard, fast boundary.” ’
—John Foster, associate director of MIT’s Haystack Observatory.
“It’s almost like these electrons are running into a glass wall in space,” said Prof Daniel Baker:
“It’s somewhat like the shields created by force fields on Star Trek that were used to repel alien weapons, we are seeing an invisible shield blocking these electrons. It’s an extremely puzzling phenomenon…”
